The Musketeer Muster is a living history educational event which focuses on the skills unique to the trained bands and militias common to 16th and 17th centuries in Europe and North America.

Activities

Musket drills, live fire musket exercise and 17th century lunch and dinner

ECWSA TX academy 2001 Activities
  • We will start at Lockhart State Park, conducting musket drill and education.
  • Drills will be based on Directions for Musters, Jacob deGheyn's Exercise of Arms and John Litchfield's The Matchlock Musket.
  • Included will be musketry safety briefings.
  • After lunch we will move to Lone Star Gun Range to conduct a live fire musketry exercise.
  • Return to Lockhart state park to clean muskets, then finish with a 17th century dinner

10:00 to 11:30 - Musket Safety Briefing and Drill
11:30 to 12:00 - 17th Century Lunch
12:00 to 12:30 - Move to Lone Star Gun Range
12:30 to 13:00 - Check in with range
13:00 to 13:30 - Safety Briefing and Musket Drill Review
13:30 to 15:30 - Musket Live Fire Exercise
15:30 to 16:00 - Move to Lockhart State Park
16:00 to 17:00 - Musket Cleaning
17:00 to 18:00 - 17th Century Dinner

  • Four sets of muskets, rests, bandoliers, priming flasks
  • Match cord
  • 2f and 3f black powder
  • Targets
  • Safety googles and ear plugs
  • Cleaning equipment
Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment.
ECWSA TX academy 2001 Instructor
John Hidalgo is a long time enthusiast of the early 17th century. He first learned renaissance military drill under Simon Spalding with the New Market Trained Band at the Texas Renaissance Festival (TRF). Later, he trained the King’s Guard at TRF teaching them drill and ceremony, pike drill, and musketry. He has also done 17th century military living history with the English Civil War Society of America. Aside from doing living history, John also served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.

  • Mince Meat Pie - Lamb with vegetables
  • Vegetable Medley - Parsnips, turnips, carrots and mushrooms
  • Fruit and Nuts Assortment - Pears, apples and roasted chestnuts

  • Starter – Beef barley stew in a bread bowl
  • Meat Course – Roast chicken
  • Side – Burgundy mushrooms
  • Dessert - 17th century recipe cheesecake
ECWSA TX academy 2001 Classroom - Lockhart State Park
The event will be held in the group dining had facility at Lockhart State Park (see: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lockhart/fees-facilities/group-facilities/group-rec-hall ).
The site has a large indoor facility with kitchen that can accommodate 75 people. It also has plenty of outdoor space in which we can conduct pike drills as well as a covered area where we can do musket drill in the event of inclement weather.
ECWSA TX academy 2001 Range - Lone Star Gun Range
We will be conducting the live fire musket exercise at Lone Star Gun Range (see: https://lonestargunrange.com/ ). This facility has covered bays so we will be able to shoot even if there is rain.
The range fee is $23 per person.
ECWSA TX academy 2001 Admission
Admission will be limited to eight students (plus staff)
The fee is $45 and includes the following:
  • Classes
  • Use of muskets and all related equipment
  • Powder, shot , match and all other related materials 17th century lunch
  • Range fee (Normally $23 at the range)
  • 17th century dinner

ECWSA TX academy 2001 What to Wear
As this is a living history event, please wear attire that is from the time period of 1500 to 1650. Early 17th century is preferred.
Some loaner period clothing may be available. Please inquire privately.
If you have period clothing but are unsure if it would be appropriate for the event, email photos of your kit to the event coordinator.
